POPE FRANCIS: “WYD, A GIFT OF THE SPIRIT AT WORK IN HEARTS AND LIVES”

POPE FRANCIS: “WYD, A GIFT OF THE SPIRIT AT WORK IN HEARTS AND LIVES”

Today’s general audience, the first after Pope Francis’ July staycation at the Santa Marta residence and then his August trip to Lisbon for World Youth Day, took place in the Paul VI Hall. The weather here can still be quite warm and the faithful were spared the discomfort of sitting under hot sun by being in the Paul VI Hall.

It is a tradition for Popes to talk about a just-concluded apostolic trip on the Wednesday following their return to Rome from a trip. (vatican media photo)

“Dear brothers and sisters,” the Holy Father began the catechesis. “During my recent Apostolic Journey to Portugal for the celebration of World Youth Day, I witnessed a moving demonstration of the presence of the Holy Spirit, the
Spirit of the Risen Christ, at work in the hearts and lives of young Christians throughout the world.”

He noted that, “Following the example of Mary, who ‘set out in haste’ after the Annunciation, the young pilgrims expressed their desire to set out towards the future of hope promised by the Gospel. The encounter of so many young people from different countries, all united by the love of Christ and the joy of the Spirit, reflected the face of the Church as the People of God, to which everyone, in every place and time, is called to belong.”

Francis added that, “In a world torn by poverty, injustice and war, we joined in prayer for the spread of the Gospel, the conversion of hearts, and the healing and peace that the Lord alone can give.

“In this spirit,” the Holy Father explained, “I also went as a pilgrim to Fatima, where I renewed the act of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. May this great outpouring of spiritual joy and love for Christ that marked these days foster an abundance of vocations and serve as a leaven of hope for the future of Portugal, the Church and our world.”

During the multi-lingual greetings to pilgrims, addressing the Italians, the Pope recalled that, in recent days, “dramatic natural phenomena have occurred in Slovenia and Georgia, causing death and material destruction.” He said he is praying for victims.

Recalling that today, Wednesday, August 9, the Church celebrates the feast day of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (St. Edith Stein), martyr and co-patroness of Europe, the Holy Father prayed that “her witness might stimulate commitment to dialogue and fraternity among peoples and against all forms of violence and discrimination.”

“To her intercession, we entrust the dear Ukrainian people, that they may soon find peace again.” (vatican news)

Two more trips in the near future are on Francis’ agenda: August 31 to September 4 to Mongolia, and later in September two days in Marseille, France, for an encounter about migration in the Mediterranean.

FACTS, FIGURES AND THE HOLY FATHER: WYD LISBON 2023

I’ve covered several World Youth Days and, as I told Jim and Joy Monday on “At Home,” these events are immensely energizing and uplifting – the sheer numbers of youths from around the world, covering them as they congregated and ate and sang and prayed and attended various catechetical sessions led by cardinals and bishops. You go to bed at night with a smile on your face and wake up the same way in the morning.

I remember each WYD as if it happened only a week ago and I could do one hour on TV or radio highlighting the stories, the events, the people who most impacted me. My first WYD was in Denver 1993 when I was an official member of the papal party as an employee of the Vatican at VIS, the Vatican Information Service. The last one I attended and covered was Madrid 2011. A thousand memories, each in living color!

Friday evening the Pope will preside at the stations of the Cross in Lisbon’s Edward VII Park. Saturday morning he will make a side trip to Fatima, the second of his papacy.  The first Pope to do so was Paul VI in 1967. Pope John Paul visited 3 times, and Benedict XVI once. The final big events in Lisbon are the youth day vigil Saturday night and the closing Mass Sunday. The Pope arrives back in Rome that evening.

The United States will be the 5th most numerous delegation in Lisbon, comprised of more than 28,600 individuals from 1,300 groups across the U.S.  Like most young pilgrims, Americans will be staying in parishes, campuses, homes, and hotels around Lisbon. They will take part in prayer and liturgies, daily catechesis, concerts, presentations, dialogue, service, and networking with young adults from around the world. More than 35 bishops from the U.S. will also serve as lead bishops for the daily catechetical sessions called “Rise Up!”

The organizers said at the press conference that there are 354,000 registered pilgrims. 190-200,000 pilgrims are already in the city today. The organizers estimate to have close to a million faithful at the final mass on Sunday. (P.S. Lisbon population is 3 million)

Lisbon is hosting 688 bishops, including 30 cardinals. The countries with the most bishops represented are Italy (109), Spain (70), France (65), the United States (61) and Portugal (36).

1,750 pilgrims with a disability

The organizers have registered 1,753 pilgrims with some kind of disability. Among them, 135 are hearing impaired and 241 are visually impaired. In Lisbon, sign language interpreters will be on hand.

25,000 volunteers

To ensure the smooth running of the event, 25,000 people have signed up to serve as volunteers. They come mainly from Portugal, Spain, France, Brazil and Colombia.

In the Lisbon area, 1,626 public spaces were made available to welcome 294,151 pilgrims. Participants also benefited from the support of 8,831 host families, who accommodated 28,618 pilgrims.

The WYD Lisbon 2023 catering network is supported by 1,800 participating establishments, with a contract to supply 2.7 million meals for the event.

5,000 journalists

WYD Lisbon has counted 5,000 media professionals accredited to cover the event.

It is also known that 77 journalists accredited to the Holy See will travel from Rome to Lisbon on Pope Francis’ plane on August 2. They will follow him until his return to Rome on Sunday August 6.

Nearly 18,000 trees planted

In the spirit of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, the Lisbon WYD aims to be eco-responsible. Among the various initiatives, 17,980 trees have already been planted.

HIGHLIGHT: Prayer is a vital part of #WYD #Lisbon2023. Pilgrims from all countries are visiting the Fatima Shrine to pray in the place where Our Mother Mary appeared to 3 little shepherds over 100 years ago. Let’s pray for a fruitful World Youth Day!

MEDIA CENTER:  The #WYD2023 Media Center is next to Lisbon’s Parque Eduardo VII, the location of the Opening Mass, the Welcome Ceremony with Pope Francis, and the Via Crucis. The center is open and has working spaces for more than 400 journalists. According to the organizers, about 5,000 professionals, including reporters, videographers and photographers, have been accredited to cover #WYD events.

POPE TO GIVE FINAL BRUSH STROKES ON A MURAL IN PORTUGAL

From Luke Coppen, Starting Seven:

POPE TO GIVE FINAL BRUSH STROKES ON A MURAL IN PORTUGAL

(From Scholas Occurrentes) On August 3, Pope Francis will travel to Cascais specifically to meet the young people of Scholas who participate in that community. During the activity, he will talk with the young people and give the final brushstroke of the 3km mural that the community has been working on.

Vatican City, July 31, 2023.The meeting will be the closing of the project “Life between Worlds”, which consists of the creation of a mural that unites worlds. This work of art involved the elderly, the young, the rich, the poor, children of different religions and non-believers and young people of different nationalities. Finally, the last brushstroke will be given by the Holy Father.

José María Del Corral, world president of the international movement Scholas Occurrentes, said: “We thank Pope Francis and the organizers of World Youth Day Lisbon 2023 very much for the effort of coming to visit us in Cascais and share with us this educational experience that is changing our lives and that gives us back a Meaning to stand up and continue fighting. The visit of Pope Francis to our headquarters is a recognition that Scholas has received for its commitment to quality education, integration and the promotion of human values.”

The project “Life Between Worlds” seeks to capture the pedagogical vision of Pope Francis by highlighting the importance of the “between”, where the encounter between people, between people and the world, between the world and life takes place, it is there, where life recovers its meaning.

This project involves the creation of a 3 km long mural born from interreligious, intergenerational and intercultural encounters made during the preparation for the visit of Pope Francis to the community of Scholas in Cascais, Portugal.

The mural of the “Life Between Worlds” created by the whole community, born from the Headquarters of Scholas, where young people from different countries met to share their pains and dreams and created an enveloping work of art, or rather, made real the “classroom without walls”. Over the course of two weeks, the young people met and lived, as in each of the experiences that were part of this project, Art, Play and Thought.

In the creation of the mural, 100 community organizations of Cascais, Portugal participated, more than 2000 people participated, who in groups of 5 to 10 collectively created 300 murals that were gathered in a single work.

Scholas Occurrentes, is an International Educational Movement of Pontifical Right

created by decree of His Holiness, Pope Francis, present in the 5 continents and that through its network integrates more than half a million schools and networks

Educational. Its mission is to respond to the call to create the Culture of Encounter, bringing together young people in an education that generates Meaning.

U.S. DELEGATION TO BE 5TH LARGEST AT LISBON WORLD YOUTH DAY

U.S. DELEGATION TO BE 5TH LARGEST AT LISBON WORLD YOUTH DAY

WASHINGTON  (USCCB) – Over 1,300 groups comprised of more than 28,600 individuals from across the United States, will travel to Lisbon, Portugal, for the thirty-seventh World Youth Day (WYD) gathering with Pope Francis. While registration numbers are still continuing to rise, the United States is among the five largest delegations participating in WYD, which is taking place August 1-6, 2023. Most U.S. pilgrims to WYD are young adults between the ages of 18 and 25. “Our country is very much looking forward to this pilgrimage,” said Bishop Robert E. Barron of Winona-Rochester, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth, which oversees the U.S. involvement in WYD. Bishop Barron, along with 60 other U.S. bishops, will be accompanying young people to Lisbon.

He went on to say, “This is a wonderful occasion for young adults to have a significant encounter with Jesus Christ in the company of the universal Church. It is also a moment when the Holy Father and the Church’s leadership get an opportunity to listen to the young people present, teach and form them in the Gospel, and ultimately send them towards their vocation and mission in the world.”

U.S. pilgrims will be staying in parishes, campuses, homes, and hotels around Lisbon during the week of WYD, taking part in prayer and liturgies, daily catechesis, concerts, presentations, dialogue, service, and networking with young adults from around the world. More than 35 bishops from the U.S. will also serve as lead bishops for the daily catechetical sessions called “Rise Up!”

Pope Francis will join the WYD pilgrims on August 3, for a Welcome Ceremony in the city center. He will also preside at a Way of the Cross on August 4, a prayer vigil on August 5, and the WYD Closing Mass, with an anticipated crowd of a million or more, on August 6.

The USCCB is planning a National Pilgrim Gathering for all U.S. pilgrims on August 2, at 7:00 p.m. local Lisbon time, in Parque da Quinta das Conchas, an open park in the city. After time of music and testimony by young adults, Bishop Barron will offer a keynote address and, with Bishop Edward Burns of Dallas, lead a Holy Hour as part of the National Eucharistic Revival initiative.

The USCCB’s Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life, and Youth recently collaborated with WYD organizers in Lisbon and Oregon Catholic Press (OCP) on the English version of the official WYD hymn, “Feel the Rush in the Air,” which was released earlier this month by OCP:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxdYqZ9N-EI.

World Youth Day began in 1986 as an initiative, inaugurated by St. John Paul II, to bring young people from around the world together to encounter Christ and the universal Church. WYD officially takes place every year as a Global Celebration of Young People (now celebrated on Christ the King Sunday); however, every 2 to 4 years, a major international event is held in a different location around the world. Past WYDs have included Buenos Aires (1987), Santiago de Compostela (1989), Czestochowa (1991), Denver (1993), Manila (1995), Paris (1997), Rome (2000), Toronto (2002), Cologne (2005), Sydney (2008), Madrid (2011), Rio de Janeiro (2013), Krakow (2016), and Panama (2019).

For more information, please visit the USCCB’s web page for WYD: www.wydusa.org. All are invited to follow the U.S. pilgrims on TwitterInstagram, and Facebook and with #JMJLisboa23 and #wydusa.

WHAT MIGHT CHANGE IN LISBON ON JULY 16?

WHAT MIGHT CHANGE IN LISBON ON JULY 16?

Sunday, July 16 Cardinal Manuel Clemente of Lisbon, Portugal, turns 75. That is the age at which a prelate must turn in his resignation to the Pope. The Pope may accept it or delay it. However, on July 9, the Pope gave Lisbon a second cardinal. So we ask: As of July 16, will cardinal-elect Americo Aguiar step in as Cardinal Clemente steps out?

Because Lisbon is the host to the 2023 World Youth Day, the Pope might not accept Clemente’s resignation until after the August event (if he accepts at all).

An interesting hypothesis as it is extremely rare that a diocese has two living cardinals.

PAPAL ITINERARY FOR WYD IN LISBON – IOR REPORTS NET INCOME OF 29.6 MILLION EURO IN 2022

UPDATE ON POPE FRANCIS: A little after 11 this morning I posted a report on Facebook and Twitter by the Italian news agency ANSA that Pope Francis had arrived at Gemelli Hospital at 10:40 for a checkup. Several hours later  Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni, answering questions from journalists, confirmed what had been reported earlier this morning: “Pope Francis went to Gemelli hospital for several clinical checkups and returned to the Vatican before noon.” No other information or details were given.

PAPAL ITINERARY FOR WYD IN LISBON

The Holy See Press Office on Tuesday, 6 June, released Pope Francis’ schedule for the 2023 World Youth Day, to take place from 1 to 6 August 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal.  Over 400,000 young people have registered to take part in the event on 1-6 August 2023. In a video message released earlier this month, the Holy Father said that the desire of these young people to travel to the Portuguese capital later this year fills him with joy, having previously done so in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2013; Krakow, Poland, in 2016; and Panama City, Panama, in 2019. Pope Francis’ itinerary for World Youth Day 2023 – Vatican News

IOR REPORTS NET INCOME OF 29.6 MILLION EURO IN 2022

The Institute for Works of Religion (“Istituto per le Opere di Religione” or IOR) published its annual report, highlighting its commitment to comply with “the highest ethical and regulatory international standards” and noting that its Moneyval rating “puts the Institute as one of the best-ranked institutions in the world.”

By Vatican News

Published Tuesday was the annual report on the activities of the Institute for Works of Religion (“Istituto per le Opere di Religione” or IOR) which, as provided for by recent regulations issued by Pope Francis, is “exclusively” responsible for the role of “asset manager and custodian of the movable patrimony of the Holy See and the Institutions connected with the Holy See.”

A statement accompanying the release of the report indicates that net income was 29.6 million euro (compared to 18.1 million euro the previous year); the net interest margin was + 3.7 percent; the net commission margin amounted to + 20.9 percent; and the Moneyval rating ranks the IOR among “the best-ranked institutions in the world.”

“For the eleventh consecutive year,” the statement reads, “the Istituto per le Opere di Religione (IOR) publishes its Annual Report containing its 2022 Financial Statements prepared in accordance with IAS-IFRS international accounting standards.”

The statement continues:

“These Financial Statements received a clean opinion from the auditor Mazars Italia S.p.A. and, on 25 April 2023, they were unanimously approved by the IOR Board of Superintendence and, as provided for in the Statutes, they were then sent to the Commission of Cardinals for their review.

“Given the soundness of the 2022 Financial Statements, and taking into account IOR’s capital requirements, the Commission of Cardinals decided upon the distribution of profits.”

In order to ensure that the Institute “can sustain its development objectives over the long term,” the Board of Superintendence recommended that the Cardinals Commission maintain a “prudent policy in the distribution of dividends as in 2022.”

This approach, the report says, “has been reinforced by the recent banking crises in the United States and Europe and the need to protect the Institute over the long term, given the particular context in which it operates. With regard to the 2022 profit, the Board, therefore, proposed to the Cardinals Commission the distribution of a dividend of 5.2 million euros.”

The Council recommended that the dividend be distributed as follows:

– 3 million euros for the religious works of Pope Francis;

– 2 million euros for the charitable activities of the Cardinals Commission;

– 200,000 Euros for the charitable activities coordinated by the Prelate of the Institute.

Cardinal Santos Abril y Castelló, the president of the Cardinals Commission, recalls in his introduction that “in 2022 the first of the legal proceedings promoted by the IOR to seek justice for the abuses perpetrated against it was also concluded. Also on the legal front, the Institute has achieved an important success with the final confiscation and recovery of significant sums, confirming the will to pursue to the end those who have, in the past, damaged the image of the Institute. These are open proceedings both in the Vatican and abroad.” A total of 17,229,882 euros, illegally taken from the Institute before 2014, were recovered after a lengthy legal process.

The prelate, Monsignor Battista Ricca, notes, “There has been an awareness that the Institute is part of a much larger and more important Body and that this Body is not the financial world but the Holy See. This realization has greatly rescaled the thought of being independent in acting and almost of being able to operate free from any norm. Moreover, the specter of authentic disasters in the past is always there to keep our eyes wide open.”

In the management report, IOR President Jean-Baptiste de Franssu writes, “2022 saw the Institute’s management focus on several areas: continuous improvement in investment management, the expansion of ethics policies, the introduction of a new IT platform, the hiring of additional professionals, and the introduction of a ‘staff evaluation and incentive system’ policy that introduces a transparent and structured performance-based remuneration system.”

In the report’s section on operational information, IOR Director General Gian Franco Mammì reports that as of December 31, 2022, “the IOR’s balance sheet assets amounted to 2.8 billion euros.” Mammì explained to Vatican Media that “in this period of uncertainty in the banking sector, the IOR stands out for its high capital solidity and robust liquidity,” with parameters “well above regulatory requirements, making it one of the most solid Institutes in the international banking scene.”

The General Manager then stressed that “overall, the range of banking and investment services has been expanded to better meet the needs of an increasingly informed and demanding clientele. This has also been possible thanks to the use of increasingly innovative platforms and software by the Institute, which continues to invest in digitalization.”

Finally, Mammì recalled, “The Institute for the Works of Religion is the only financial institution at the service of the Church in the world that bases its activity on the principle of consistency with Catholic ethics and not on the principle of the highest possible profit while respecting international banking standards and best practices.”

MAY 22, FEAST OF ST. RITA OF CASCIA – POPE FRANCIS TO SPEND 5 DAYS IN PORTUGAL FOR WYD

MAY 22, FEAST OF ST. RITA OF CASCIA

If by chance you did not know St. Rita before today, be sure to dedicate a few minutes to learning about her amazing life through this link: St. Rita of Cascia, Peacemaker | Franciscan Media

I’ve visited her shrine in Cascia and it is definitely worth a side trip if this Umbrian town is not on your Italian itinerary. Here is a Vatican media photo of the tomb with her incorrupt body where pilgrims venerate and pray to her.

A prayer to St. Rita, patronness of helpless causes: “O powerful St. Rita, rightly called Saint of the Impossible, I come to you with confidence in my great need. You know well my trials, for you yourself were many times burdened in this life. Come to my help, speak for me, pray with me, intercede on my behalf before the Father.”

Her body was brought to Rome in May of the 2000 Holy Year, the centenary of her canonization. Here is a link to the speech of Pope John Paul on May 20, 2000 to the pilgrims in town for the Jubilee and commemoration of St. Rita (and 2 days after his 80th birthday!): To the pilgrims gathered to venerate Saint Rita of Cascia and to the Cavalieri del Lavoro (May 20, 2000) | John Paul II (vatican.va)

POPE FRANCIS TO SPEND 5 DAYS IN PORTUGAL FOR WYD

The Vatican announced today that Pope Francis will be in Lisbon, Portugal for the 2023 World Youth Day from August 2 to 6, including a side trip to the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima on August 5.

Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni said, “”On the occasion of the next World Youth Day, and accepting the invitation of the civil and ecclesial authorities of Portugal, His Holiness Pope Francis will travel to Lisbon from 2-6 August of this year, making a visit to the Shrine of Fatima on 5 August.”

Pope Francis previously visited Fatima May 12 and 13, 2017 on the centenary of the apparitions to the three young Portuguese children.

POPE TO WYD PARTICIPANTS: LISBON 2023 A CHANCE TO GROW IN HOPE

Previously, in January of this year, Pope Francis sent a video message to youth for WYD Lisbon 2023: Pope on WYD 2023: ‘Young people thirst for horizons’ – Vatican News

POPE TO WYD PARTICIPANTS: LISBON 2023 A CHANCE TO GROW IN HOPE

Pope Francis sends a video message to young people registered for World Youth Day in Lisbon, Portugal, and urges them to prepare themselves to encounter others and grow in hope.

By Devin Watkins

With less than three months to go to World Youth Day (WYD), Pope Francis has sent his encouragement to participants registered for the event in Lisbon, Portugal, on 1-6 August.

In his video message released on Thursday, the Pope praised the excitement the young Catholics must feel as they prepare to travel.

“I can imagine the things you must have on your mind, how you’re going to: make it happen, request your work or study permit, get what you need for your trip, so many concerns!”

At the same time, the Pope urged the young people to “look toward the horizon” by using their excitement and hope as a stepping stone.

Pope Francis acknowledged that taking part in WYD is “a beautiful thing” built on the hope of events that will unfold.

“Prepare yourselves with that enthusiasm,” he told the young people. “Have hope, because one grows a lot at an event like WYD.”

They may not realize it yet, he said, but the young people can expect to discover wonderful new things as they meet people from other parts of the world and build relationships founded on common values.

Talk to grandparents before WYD

The Pope said the Church is blessed to enjoy the “strength of youth,” and so he encouraged participants in WYD to prepare well for what lies ahead.

He also shared with them a “secret” for a proper preparation.

“In order to prepare well,” he said, “it helps to look to your roots by meeting with your elders,” such as grandparents.

Participants in the upcoming WYD in Lisbon should ask their grandparents: “What do you think I must do?”

Our elders, concluded Pope Francis, “will give you wisdom.”

And he wrapped up his video message by encouraging the young people to “strive ahead”, saying he is looking forward to encountering them in Lisbon.
