HAPPY 95TH ANNIVERSARY, VATICAN RADIO! – ELETTRA MARCONI: RADIO REMAINS THE MOST RELIABLE MEDIUM

I am back in Rome after an unforgettable trip to New York, attending the installation Mass of Abp. Ronald Hicks, New York’s new archbishop, sharing a meal with Cardina Dolan, my friend of three decades, and breaking bread with so many other friends!  It’s good to be here but I already miss the Big Apple!

HAPPY 95TH ANNIVERSARY, VATICAN RADIO!

Today, as you are about to read, is Vatican Radio’s 95th anniversary! Best wishes to everyone at the radio! I had a program there for many years called “Joan Knows.” Wishing everyone many, many more wonderful years!

Elettra Marconi, daughter of Guglielmo Marconi, inventor of Vatican Radio, was interviewed for this occasion by Vatican News. Elettra is a regular guest at many social events in Rome and I’ve spoken to her on a number of occasions over the years including several times at the Rector’s Dinner at the North American College. Being with her, as you can imagine, is just like listening to a history book! She is celebrated for loving the color blue (and various shades of it, especially turquoise, even green) and you can always spot her in a room, her smile inviting you as well!

ELETTRA MARCONI: RADIO REMAINS THE MOST RELIABLE MEDIUM

‘All my affection and gratitude.’ Those are Princess Elettra Marconi’s words on the 95th anniversary of Vatican Radio, inaugurated by her father Guglielmo on 12 February 1931 at the invitation of Pope Pius XI.

By Massimiliano Menichetti

Interviewing Princess Elettra Marconi is an extraordinary experience. Not only because we are in the apartment on Rome’s Via Condotti, steeped in memories, from which her father Guglielmo, at the push of a button on October 12, 1931, illuminated the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro – but also because one feels the strength and devotion of a daughter who has dedicated her entire life to promoting the legacy of one of the greatest scientists of all time.

An English-language transcript of the interview is below.

Q: Princess Elettra, you have always been a strong supporter of Vatican Radio. What does the broadcaster’s 95th anniversary mean to you?

A: It is an extremely important date, because in my father’s life it was a very beautiful and deeply moving moment. He had great faith in God and also great admiration and friendship for the Holy Father, Pope Pius XI. He was always supported by the Pope in Italy. The Pope himself had the mind of a researcher; he followed inventions closely, wanted to know the details, and would call to hear about the latest discoveries.

Guglielmo Marconi designed and physically built Vatican Radio, inaugurated in 1931. What did he tell you about that experience?

Everything revolved around the importance of Vatican Radio. Thank God there is that beautiful newsreel by the Istituto Luce, which shows my father—after agreeing with the Pope to build this powerful radio station to reach the whole world—presenting it. He wanted to present the Pope to the world. In that footage, you can see how aware and moved my father was. And the Pope’s response—Pius XI’s words—were wonderful and extraordinarily intelligent.

My father devoted himself completely to the project. It was the longest period he ever stayed in Rome, for several consecutive months. He was always traveling—London, New York—but this was exceptional.

I remember that whenever we returned, we would speak about how that had been his longest stay in one place. He went to the Vatican every day, and every day the Pope would walk in the Vatican gardens to follow the progress of the work. There are marvelous photographs and film of them together. A street was later named “Via Guglielmo Marconi.” There is a photograph of His Holiness Pope Pius XI walking beside him there. THE BIG APPLE WELCOMES A NEW ARCHBISHOP!

THE BIG APPLE WELCOMES A NEW ARCHBISHOP!

My segment today on EWTN’s “At Home with Jim and Joy” – all about the installation Mass of Abp. Ronald Hicks as the new archbishop of New York and the tribute to Cardinal Dolan…

POPE’S FEBRUARY PRAYER INTENTION: ‘FOR CHILDREN WITH INCURABLE DISEASES’

Greetings from New York!  I am in the Big Apple for Vespers this evening and the Installation Mass tomorrow of Archbishop-elect Ronald Hicks as the successor of Cardinal Timothy Dolan who became the archbishop in 2009. When the cardinal turned 75 on February 6, 2025, he sent a letter of resignation to Pope Francis as is mandated by Canon Law. Francis died in April, 2025. Pope Leo accepted Dolan’s resignation and named his successor, Bishop Hicks of Joliet, Illinois, in December 2025.

Though a Chicagoan, I have, over the years, been friends with three of Bishop Hick’s predecessors in New York, namely, Cardinals O’Connor, Egan and Dolan, whom I have known for 32 years. So many great stories with all three! I am in New York as much for that friendship with Dolan as I am for his successor, Bishop Hicks. I’m fairly sure we have some friends in common in Chicago and hope to learn that in these days.

I am blessed to have a great number of friends in New York and have plans to see almost everyone for breakfast, lunch or dinner and in between! I’ll try to keep you posted on people, places and events as best I can in this column but be sure to check in with me on facebook.com/joan.lewis.10420 and also on X @joansrome

In fact, I’ll be posting on FB some photos I took yesterday in a taxi of the miles and miles of snow, piled high wherever you look, piles that range from 1 foot to 6 or more feet high! This is the snow that was plowed off the streets 10 days ago but has not melted as temperatures have been too low!

Stay tuned!  And say a prayer for Cardinal Dolan and for his successor, Archbishop-elect Hicks! (He officially becomes Archbishop Hicks tomorrow at his installation Mass)

POPE’S FEBRUARY PRAYER INTENTION: ‘FOR CHILDREN WITH INCURABLE DISEASES’

Pope Leo XIV releases his prayer intention for the month of Feburary, and invites Catholics to pray with him to recognize the face of God in every suffering child.

By Devin Watkins

“Lord Jesus, who welcomed the little ones in your arms and blessed them tenderly, today we bring before you the children living with incurable illnesses.”

Pope Leo XIV opened his monthly Pray with the Pope video with that prayer for suffering children.

He recalled that their “fragile bodies” are a sign of Jesus’ presence and that their smiles in the midst of pain bear witness to God’s Kingdom.

“We ask you, Lord, that they may never lack proper medical care, human and compassionate attention, and the support of a community that accompanies them with love.”

Pope Leo prayed for the families of children who are ill and for their caregivers and doctors, expressing his hope that the Holy Spirit may enlighten their decisions and grant them patience and tenderness.

“Lord, teach us to recognize your face in every suffering child,” he said. “May their vulnerability awaken our compassion, and move us to care, accompany, and love with concrete gestures of solidarity.”

In conclusion, Pope Leo invited Catholics to pray that the Church may know how to uphold fragility and become a source of comfort in the midst of suffering.

Millions praying for suffering children

A press release by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, which organizes the Pray with the Pope initiative, said Pope Leo is carrying suffering children in his heart this month.

The video accompanying his prayer intention was recorded in the Church of St. Pellegrino in the Vatican. As he speaks, the Pope can be seen holding drawings from children suffering from different illnesses who are being cared for at the Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital in Rome.

According to the World Health Organization, around 400,000 children and teenagers are diagnosed with cancer each year, making it one of the leading causes of infant and adolescent death.

UNICEF, the UN children’s agency, says over 2.1 billion children and teenagers under 20 are affected by chronic illnesses or long-term health conditions. Around 1 million children under 20 die each year due to these illnesses.

As Fr. Cristóbal Fones, Director of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, said, “It fills us with hope knowing that more than 20 million people in more than 90 countries are joining in prayer for this intention. It means that this challenging and difficult reality touches their hearts and deepens their commitment.”

For the very moving video of Pope Leo reciting his prayer intention: Pope’s February prayer intention: ‘For children with incurable diseases’ – Vatican News

Pope Leo’s prayer for children with incurable diseases:

Lord Jesus, who welcomed the little ones in your arms and blessed them tenderly, today we bring before you the children living with incurable illnesses.

Their fragile bodies are a sign of your presence, and their smiles, even in the midst of pain, are a testimony of your Kingdom.

We ask you, Lord, that they may never lack proper medical care,
human and compassionate attention,
and the support of a community that accompanies them with love.

Sustain their families in hope, in the midst of weariness and uncertainty, and make of them witnesses of a faith that grows stronger through trial.

Bless the hands of doctors, nurses, and caregivers, so that their work may always be an expression of active compassion. May your Spirit enlighten them in every difficult decision, and grant them patience and tenderness to serve with dignity.

Lord, teach us to recognize your face in every suffering child.
May their vulnerability awaken our compassion, and move us to care, accompany, and love with concrete gestures of solidarity.

Make of us a Church that, animated by the feelings of your Heart
and moved by prayer and service, knows how to uphold fragility,
and in the midst of suffering, becomes a source of comfort,
a seed of hope, and a proclamation of new life.

Amen.

JOHN HENRY NEWMAN INSCRIBED IN THE GENERAL ROMAN CALENDAR WITH MEMORIAL ON OCTOBER 9

Tuesday, February 3, 2026

TODAY’S JEWEL: Knowing and living your values gives you the ability to quickly and confidently make decisions.

What a terrific story!  Who knows how many times I’ve walked right by Kungfoo Express on Via del Mascherino, about a two-minute walk from the main entrance to Vatican City!  And yes, many prelates and lay employees of the Vatican eat here, given the closeness of their offices or apartments to Via del Mascherino. I love Chinese food and occasionally go to the restaurant across from my building but will go here asap. An order of spring rolls for Cardinal Prevost, please | National Catholic Reporter

JOHN HENRY NEWMAN INSCRIBED IN THE GENERAL ROMAN CALENDAR WITH MEMORIAL ON OCTOBER 9

The Dicastery of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments releases a decree on Tuesday, February 3, in which Pope Leo XIV inscribes the Doctor of the Church, St. John Henry Newman, in the General Roman Calendar.

By Isabella H. de Carvalho

Pope Leo XIV inscribes St. John Henry Newman, Doctor of the Church, in the General Roman Calendar, with his optional memorial being on October 9, the Dicastery of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments announced in a decree released on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

The 19th century English Anglican priest, who converted to Catholicism and then became a cardinal, was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2019. On November 1, 2025, Pope Leo proclaimed him co-Patron of the Church’s educational mission, along with St. Thomas Aquinas, and a Doctor of the Church.

Considering this recent recognition, “conferred upon a saintly pastor of such outstanding significance for the entire community of the faithful,” the decree states that his optional memorial can now be celebrated on October 9 – the day in which, in 1845, he converted to Catholicism.

The decree explains that the new memorial will in fact “be inserted into all Calendars and Liturgical Books for the celebration of Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours, adopting the liturgical texts attached to the present decree, which are to be translated, approved, and—after confirmation by this Dicastery—published by the Conferences of Bishops.”

The Dicastery’s decree was released on Tuesday, February 3, but was signed by the Prefect of the body, Cardinal Arthur Roche, and the Secretary, Archbishop Vittorio Francesco Viola, on November 9, 2025, Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica.

A radiant light for the Church

“The kindly light of God’s grace, which came into this world to enlighten the gentiles, led John Henry Newman to find peace in the Catholic Church and gave him such strength that he was able to say ‘God has created me to do Him some definite service … I have a part in this great work; I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught’,” the decree highlights.

The text emphasizes how, throughout his long life, Cardinal Newman continuously and tirelessly served the poor, preached and taught and engaged in “intellectual enquiry”. The decree defines him as “a radiant light for the Church on pilgrimage through history.”

“His lively mind has left us enduring monuments of great importance in the fields of theology and ecclesiology, as well as poetic and devotional compositions,” the decree continues.

“His constant search to be led out of shadows and images into the fullness of the truth has become an example for every disciple of the Risen One.”
