Pope Francis made a surprise visit to the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, less than 24 hours after returning from his Apostolic Journey to Mongolia.

The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, announced in a statement that the Holy Father visited the Vatican Dicastery on Tuesday morning, just after 9 a.m., where he met with and thanked Cardinal Luis Francisco Ladaria for all his work during his years serving as its Prefect.

After meeting with the Jesuit Cardinal, the Holy Father also greeted various officials within the Vatican Dicastery.

In July 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Ladaria, a Spanish Jesuit and theologian, as the Secretary of the then-Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and made him an Archbishop.

Pope Francis named him Prefect during his pontificate, succeeding Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Muller.

Named Cardinal in 2018, Cardinal Ladaria served as the Dicastery’s Prefect from 2017 to 2023.

Cardinal-elect Victor Manuel Fernández of La Plata, Argentina, is succeeding 79-year-old Cardinal Ladaria as DDF Prefect, and will soon take office in mid-September.

The Holy Father just completed his four-day Apostolic Journey to the Asian country of Mongolia to visit its 1,500-strong Catholic community, mostly concentrated in the nation’s capital of Ulaanbaatar.

The visit marked the Pope’s 43rd Apostolic Journey abroad and the 61st country visited as Pope.

The Holy Father is scheduled to hold his General Audience in the Vatican on Wednesday morning.

DICASTERY FOR CAUSES OF SAINTS ON ULMA FAMILY BEATIFICATION: 7TH CHILD WAS BORN WHEN MOTHER WAS KILLED

DICASTERY FOR CAUSES OF SAINTS ON ULMA FAMILY BEATIFICATION: 7TH CHILD WAS BORN WHEN MOTHER WAS KILLED

The Dicastery for the Causes of Saints released a note on September 5 referring to an upcoming beatification ceremony of a Polish family of 9, Mother, Father and 7 children.

Stories have spoken of the family of 9 as two parents, 6 children and the 7th in the womb.

An August 31 Vatican News story said, “the upcoming beatification of the Ulma family on 10 September 2023 marks an unprecedented event in the modern canonization process.

“This family, made up of parents Josef and Wiktoria Ulma and their children, including the unborn child Wiktoria was carrying, will be collectively honored. This unusual beatification stands as a testament to their sacrifice during World War II, when they sheltered and protected eight Jews from persecution.”

“Tragedy struck when the Ulmas were denounced and betrayed. Nazi forces stormed their home, and their attic, where they had concealed their Jewish friends, became a site of horror. Josef and Wiktoria were executed in front of their children, with Wiktoria being seven months pregnant. Even the children were not spared. The house was set ablaze, marking the tragic event on March 24, 1944.

However, today’s note from the Dicastery for Causes of Saints says the 7th was born the moment the mother was killed.

The note, referring to some stories published by the media relative to the martyrdom of the Ulma family, whose beatification will be celebrated on Sunday, September 10, 2023 in Markowa, Poland, made three points.

  1. At the moment in which she was killed, Wiktoria Alma was in an advanced state of pregnancy with her seventh child.
  2. This child was born at the very moment of the mother was killed.
  3. This child, therefore, was added to the number of children, also murdered. In fact, in the martyrdom of the parents, this child received baptism of blood.
